I found this quote the other day: "You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should've behaved better" - Anne Lamott
This quote brought me back to something that we discussed after interviewing Dana which is the fact that our stories are irrevocably intertwined with other people's stories. (context: she was making a piece about her family and was told she had to tell her family about it before performing). This quote contradicts that idea. It suggests that whatever has happened is free game to use now; however, I don't think that respects the idea that everyone has the right to share their own story how and if they want to. As a performer one may feel the need to make a piece about an experience but those involved might not. On the one hand, I do believe that "you own everything that happened to you" because it is a part of your identity, but on the other, the relationships you have with others is also a vital part of who you are as a person. I don't think it's necessary to ask permission to share your story but it is important to have the respect to communicate about it with those involved.
